Q: I want to bring the living room in my fifties semi into the 21st century. It’s a 24-foot through room, with a bay at one end, patio doors at the other, and a chimney breast in the middle. The grey wool carpet has to stay, but I want to replace my three-piece suite. I live alone but often have friends and family round, so I need it to be cosy but also practical. Any ideas what to go for and how to arrange it?
A: OK, well moving into the 21st Century sounds great but how about mixing a little 20th Century in too? The fifties room you describe sounds fab and it would be a great ‘home’ for some new stuff alongside some period pieces. For the new, check out my latest sofa and snuggler combo in blues and greys at John Lewis – these would work perfectly with your grey carpet and they are both practical and cosy too! I think I would then add some mid 20th Century touches in the form of a lamp or coffee table just to add that dash of retro cool and so key everything back to the original design of your house. My top tip would be to visit Tent London in September where they have soime of the best mid Century antique dealers in the country. It is a great show and you’ll have a really fun day out…I guarantee you’ll find the perfect finishing touch!
